The School of Economics and Management held a teaching salon of “Ideological and Political Construction of Public Management Courses (I)——Reform and Enlightenment of German Social Welfare System”

——Subtly enhance the value of future scientific and technological workers

The teaching salon of “Ideological and Political Construction of Public Management Courses (I)——Reform and Enlightenment of German Social Welfare System” was jointly held by the School of Economics and Management and Office of Faculty Affairs in Room 327, Xinyuan District II, South Campus at 10:30 am on December 18, 2019, in order to better implement the concept of “foster virtue through education”into classroom teaching, promote the University’s ideological and political courses and ideological and political education to advance in coordination and complement each other, and build a large pattern of education.The teaching salon was hosted by Associate Professor Zhou Yuan from the Department of Public Administration, and Dr. Li Zhijun from the same department gave a lecture. This event attracted teachers from School of Economics and Management, School of Aerospace Science and Technology, School of Life Science and Technology, School of Humanities, School of Electronic Engineering and School of Foreign Languages.

Teacher Li Zhijun introduced a huge and unsustainable welfare system and the reform of welfare system which focused on labor market reform in Germany at the beginning of the 21st century from the perspective of trivial things in life. This reform was generally successful and helped Germany get rid of economic stagnation: its employment rate was higher than that of major developed countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, and its per capital GDP was much higher than that of the United Kingdom, France and other countries in the European Union.At the end of the course, Teacher Li discussed about the enlightenment of German welfare system and social policy.

Teacher Li interspersed some comparisons between China and Germany from time to time during the teaching process, for example, per capital GDP curve of China and Germany since 1970s which showed the objective difference between the economic levels of both countries. At the same time, she also stressed the great efforts Chinese government had made to improve the welfare of Chinese citizens, the great achievements it had made and the implicit welfare in China while introducing the huge welfare system of Germany, which answered the students’ questions in thought, value and emotion about our welfare system to some extent. Once a student wrote on examination paper of Ms. Li’s course: this is a course which requires us to get the world view of proletariat and also master professional knowledge and expertise.At the same time,Ms. Li also introduced the personal dilemma faced by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder when he carried out the reform of German welfare system: “Schroeder bravely carried out a reform that gent against his party’s traditional tenets, making him one of the most unpopular politicians in Germany at that time. However, the history finally proved that his reform was farsighted and in line with the long-term interests of the country and the people. Such a reform required great courage and extraordinary boldness, although it was not understood by the people at that time.”Any reform has required patriotism of “regarding the national affairs as our own duty” regardless of personal gains and losses at all times and in all over the world. Ms. Li naturally integrated such feelings into the course, thus stimulating students' enthusiasm and motivation to study for the country and nation and also achieving a lifelong silent transforming influence on students' character.

Finally, Professor Wang Linxue, Associate Professors Ai Shizhong, Liang Jin'an, Zheng Youyuan, Zheng Guanqun and other teachers who attended the meeting shared their experience in integrating ideological and political education into the teaching process and fostering character and civic virtue in the classroom. Through in-depth exchange and communication, we have deepened our understanding of ideological and political education incorporated in the course, which can help students establish correct values, improve their judgment, decision-making and control ability in the face of complex problems, and enhance their self-confidence in the chosen path, theory, system and culture.
